The Shadow of a Choice

In my novel, Neighbors Across the Street, the character Daniel Briggs makes a choice that costs him everything. Driven by the turmoil of desperation, he commits an act—not with the intent to cause harm, but as a misguided attempt to force the “true wrongdoers” to answer for the ruin they brought upon him. However, that single decision changed his life forever. It stole his freedom, robbed him of his family, and paved a road of unintended consequences that shattered the lives of many others in its wake.

Daniel was a simple man living a simple life—running his own small company and raising a family with his wife and young child. Sound familiar? He was the quintessential blue-collar worker living the American dream: a business owner making his own decisions to ensure his company’s success, his own availability, and his family’s financial security. Like many growing families, as his household expanded, so did his financial responsibilities. When they decided to become a single-income home to avoid the high cost of childcare, the full weight of that responsibility fell squarely on his shoulders as the breadwinner.

Economic hardship is a universal experience. When the cost of living spikes, people scramble for a lifeline—second jobs, side hustles, or “too-good-to-be-true” investments. We’ve all heard that “desperate times call for desperate measures,” but desperation is a dangerous compass. In a crisis, the hardest thing to do is stay calm and assess the damage without panicking. We know that recessions and inflation are just part of the economic cycle, but that’s a bitter pill to swallow when you’re drowning in debt and don’t know if the lights will stay on. The problem is that panic-driven reactions rarely lead to solutions. Instead, they lead to the kind of irreversible choices that ruined Daniel’s life—choices that, under enough pressure, could happen to any of us.

You have to ask yourself: is a frantic reaction worth the risk of losing it all? While there is a lesson in the “loss of everything”—the chance to rediscover yourself and rebuild from the ashes—it is a brutal way to learn. We can choose to evolve and learn from our mistakes without paying such a detrimental price.

We all face shadows in the road, but the real challenge is ensuring that The Shadow of a Choice doesn’t leave the things we love abandoned in the dirt.
